Rolex - Reference 18038
Circa 1986 · Case no. 9,132,660 · Day-Date

Introduced in 1977 as the successor to the Reference 1803, the Reference 18038 marked an important modernization of Rolex's flagship Day-Date. It retained the familiar 36 mm Oyster case and classic proportions while introducing a sapphire crystal and the automatic Caliber 3055, whose single quick-set mechanism allowed the date to be adjusted independently.

The present watch combines an 18K yellow-gold case with a champagne dial, the most recognizable and enduring configuration of the period. Produced before the arrival of the double quick-set Reference 18238, the 18038 occupies an appealing middle ground between the character of earlier four-digit Rolex watches and the everyday practicality of later models. Presented on an aftermarket black leather strap with WRISTORIAN presentation packaging.

Condition: The watch presents in very good vintage condition, with a clean, well-preserved dial, a well-defined case and fluted bezel, and light surface wear consistent with its age and careful use.

WRISTORIAN Perspective
The Reference 18038 captures the Day-Date at an important point in its evolution, retaining the classic 36 mm proportions and unmistakable presence of the earlier “President” while adding a sapphire crystal and quick-set date for greater practicality. In yellow gold with a champagne dial, it is quintessentially Rolex without being overstated. Long associated with achievement and influence, the Day-Date ultimately endures because its design is coherent, recognizable and remarkably resistant to fashion. This 1986 example offers the character of vintage Rolex with the usability of a more modern timepiece.
