Introduced during the mid-1980s as the sapphire-backed counterpart to Reference 3940, Reference 3941 belongs to Patek Philippe’s first generation of ultra-thin self-winding perpetual-calendar wristwatches powered by caliber 240 Q. Whereas Reference 3940 was originally supplied with a solid gold caseback, Reference 3941 was distinguished by a snap-on sapphire-crystal display back, permitting an uninterrupted view of the movement and its recessed 22K gold micro-rotor. Once Patek Philippe began offering Reference 3940 with both solid and glazed backs, the separate 3941 designation became unnecessary, and Reference 3941 was discontinued in 1990. Fewer than 50 examples are known to have appeared publicly.
The present rose-gold example retains the reference's classically proportioned 36 mm case, stepped bezel and tapered lugs. Its silvered dial displays applied rose-gold baton markers and matching dauphine hands, with subsidiary indications for the day and 24-hour cycle at 9 o'clock, month and leap-year cycle at 3 o'clock, and date with moon phases at 6 o'clock. The Geneva Seal caliber 240 Q is a 27-jewel self-winding movement incorporating a 22K gold micro-rotor and Gyromax balance.
Condition: The silvered dial presents cleanly, with well-defined printing, applied markers and subsidiary indications. The rose-gold case displays surface wear and evidence of prior polishing while retaining visible hallmarks on the lugs. The movement presents attractively beneath the sapphire display back. The signed Patek Philippe rose-gold prong buckle shows wear consistent with use. The fitted Patek Philippe leather strap presents well overall, with visible wear and creasing consistent with use.
