Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3440J
The Reference 3440 represents Patek Philippe's continued refinement of the Calatrava concept during the early 1960s, a period when the manufacture combined classical dial restraint with increasingly robust case construction and self-winding movement architecture.
The champagne-toned dial exhibits warm, even patination consistent with age and careful use. Applied gold baton hour markers structure the dial surface, while the highly desirable double signature for Patek Philippe and Tiffany & Co. situates the watch within the historic retail partnership between the Geneva manufacture and the New York jeweler. Subsidiary seconds preserve the traditional Calatrava dial symmetry.
The 18K yellow gold case measures 34.2 mm and features gently downturned lugs that allow the watch to sit comfortably on the wrist despite its relatively generous diameter for the era. The case employs a threaded screw-back construction, offering improved protection against moisture and dust compared with the snap-back architecture common to earlier Calatravas.
The watch is powered by the self-winding calibre 27-460, one of Patek Philippe's most respected automatic movements of the period, featuring an 18K gold rotor and Gyromax balance. The crown is signed with the Patek Philippe Calatrava cross.
Condition: The watch presents in honest vintage condition with attractive dial patina and balanced overall appearance. The case retains visible hallmarks, though they show evidence of prior polishing and are no longer factory crisp. The dial presents warmly and evenly aged, and the Tiffany signature remains clear and well defined. The crystal appears thicker than typically encountered on the reference and may represent a later replacement. Overall the watch reflects careful long-term ownership and preservation rather than restoration.
