With Certificate of Origin, Leather Wallet, Booklet, Strap, and 18k Buckle
There’s “timepiece only” vintage, and then there’s darn near full-set. This 1986 Patek Philippe Reference 3944J comes with nearly everything it originally left the boutique with except the box, which has surely fallen apart by now given that the timepiece is approaching forty years old.
In fact, this particular example left the factory in April 1986, as confirmed by decoding the PKNR date code printed on the Certificat d’Origine. That certificate is included, along with the official Patek Philippe leather wallet and yes, it appears to be real leather; would Patek really have gone with plastic? Also included is the original instruction booklet.
The black leather strap is of authentic Patek Philippe issue. It is used but still very wearable and features a classic crocodile grain. Whether it is true crocodile or embossed calfskin, it wears comfortably and looks the part. Holding it all together is the correct 18k yellow gold Patek Philippe pin buckle, exactly as it should be.
This timepiece returned from service yesterday. A new battery was installed, and the case and buckle were hand-polished lightly and respectfully. It now presents better in person than it did in the pre-service photos.
In my humble opinion, there is something genuinely nice and convenient about a quartz Patek Philippe. It is always ready to strap on. No winding. No setting. No fuss. And when it comes with a date display like this one, it’s even more useful.
Produced from 1985 through 1998, Reference 3944 represented a refined fusion of traditional styling and modern reliability. This early production model, made in 1986, reflects the original design intent with its proportions and finishing details.
It looks cool with jeans and is the ultimate companion for a suit or tuxedo. This is a versatile, understated, and quietly extraordinary timepiece for those who value completeness, elegance, and simplicity all at once.
