Catalogue Notes

Introduced in 1982, the Patek Philippe Reference 3796 was conceived as the modern successor to the legendary Reference 96, the original Calatrava introduced in 1932. While the watch incorporated contemporary mechanical refinements, its proportions remained deliberately faithful to the classical Calatrava template. With a diameter of approximately 31 millimeters, the reference preserved the understated elegance and disciplined geometry that had defined Patek Philippe's dress watches for generations.

The reference is powered by the manually wound caliber 215 PS, a compact and finely finished movement developed to continue the tradition of thin, manually wound Calatrava calibers while improving performance standards for the modern era. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a power reserve of approximately 44 hours, the caliber represents a thoughtful evolution of the manufacture's long-standing approach to refined time-only wristwatches.

The dial of the present example is executed in a particularly appealing configuration, pairing a rose-toned dial surface with an 18k rose gold case—an arrangement often referred to by collectors as “pink on pink.” Applied rose gold baton markers and dauphine hands maintain the restrained design language of the Calatrava line, while the subsidiary seconds display at six o'clock reinforces the classical layout that has characterized the reference since its introduction. The dial also retains the sigma designation at the lower edge, indicating the use of precious metal dial furniture.

Manufactured in April 1995 and originally sold on July 27 of that year, the watch is accompanied by an extensive suite of documentation including its original Certificat d'origine, guarantee and warranty cards, and associated Patek Philippe documentation. The presence of Japanese warranty and service materials indicates that the watch was originally retailed in the Japanese market, a region long recognized among collectors for its careful stewardship of fine mechanical timepieces.

Condition:
The 18k rose gold case presents in attractive overall condition with well-preserved geometry and a faint but visible hallmark to the case flank at approximately the 9 o'clock position. The rose dial appears clean and well preserved with sharp printing and applied markers. The watch is fitted with a Patek Philippe signed soft black calfskin strap with velour finish showing light wear and an 18k rose gold Patek Philippe tang buckle.

WRISTORIAN Perspective
Below is the WRISTORIAN Perspective, built to your locked structure and tone:

between paragraphs interpretive, not cataloguing integrates the Ref. 96 lineage, neo-vintage context, and pink-on-pink desirability ends with a measured but confident collector closing WRISTORIAN Perspective Within the long lineage of Patek Philippe’s dress watches, the Reference 3796 occupies a quietly important place. Introduced in 1982, the model was conceived as a direct continuation of the original Calatrava concept first established by the Reference 96 in 1932. While the watch incorporated modern mechanical refinements, its proportions and visual language remained intentionally faithful to the classical template: a compact round case, restrained dial architecture, and a focus on proportion rather than ornament. In this way, the 3796 became the bridge between the vintage Calatrava era and the modern age of Patek Philippe.

The appeal of the reference lies largely in its purity. At just over thirty millimeters in diameter, the watch preserves the elegant scale that defined Patek Philippe’s mid-century dress watches. The slender case profile and manual-wind architecture reinforce the sense of refinement that has long distinguished the Calatrava line. While later generations of dress watches would grow larger and more assertive, the 3796 remains rooted in the philosophy that elegance is best expressed through restraint.

The present example adds another layer of character through its rose-on-rose configuration—an arrangement collectors often describe as “pink on pink.” By pairing a rose dial with a matching rose gold case, the watch achieves a warmth and visual cohesion rarely found in more conventional dial treatments. The effect is subtle yet unmistakable: the dial appears to glow softly against the surrounding gold, giving the watch a tone that feels both vintage in spirit and quietly luxurious.

For collectors who appreciate the deeper structure of the Patek Philippe catalogue, the Reference 3796 occupies a particularly meaningful position. It represents the final era in which the Calatrava remained almost entirely faithful to the proportions and philosophy of the original reference 96. As such, the watch stands as one of the clearest expressions of the Calatrava ideal—proportion, clarity, and mechanical refinement distilled into its most disciplined form.

Within that context, the pink-on-pink execution holds a special appeal. The configuration combines the classical restraint of the Calatrava with a warmth of tone that feels both distinctive and enduring. For many collectors assembling a thoughtful Patek Philippe collection, the presence of a rose-gold Calatrava—particularly in this harmonious dial configuration—becomes a natural and satisfying cornerstone. It is a watch that does not compete for attention, yet quietly reminds the observer of what has always made Patek Philippe exceptional: proportion, balance, and a design language capable of transcending generations.
