The Patek Philippe Reference 1578 was introduced during the mid-1940s and remained in production into the 1950s as part of the manufacture's evolving Calatrava family. Measuring approximately 35 millimeters in diameter, the reference offered a slightly larger interpretation of the classic round dress watch at a time when most wristwatches remained closer to 31–33 millimeters. Its proportions, combined with distinctive lug architecture, give the reference a notably balanced and elegant presence within Patek Philippe's mid-century production.
A defining feature of the reference is its sculptural lug design, commonly referred to as "teardrop lugs." These elongated, tapered lugs extend fluidly from the case band and contribute significantly to the visual identity of the model. The design provides a graceful transition between the case and strap while maintaining the restrained aesthetic that characterizes the Calatrava line.
The present watch is powered by the manually wound caliber 27SC, one of Patek Philippe's principal center-seconds movements of the mid-twentieth century. Introduced in the early 1940s, the caliber was widely used across several references during the period and is appreciated for its robust construction and reliable architecture.
The dial is executed in a classic configuration featuring applied rose gold Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 complemented by applied hour markers and a printed minute track. The sweep center seconds hand adds a subtle element of motion to the otherwise restrained layout, reinforcing the clean and legible character typical of Patek Philippe's dress watches of the era.
Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production in 1952 and original sale on September 3, 1953, the watch represents a characteristic example of the reference during the height of the manufacture's mid-century production.
Condition:
The 18k rose gold case presents in attractive overall condition with well-preserved lug geometry. A crisp hallmark remains visible on the underside of the lug at approximately the 10:30 position. The dial appears clean and well preserved with sharp printing and applied markers, consistent with an original surface. The watch is fitted to a shiny black crocodile Speidel strap with an aftermarket gold-toned buckle stamped INOX.
