Patek Philippe Reference 3970EJ-053 represents one of the most important perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatches of the late twentieth century. Introduced in 1986 as the successor to the legendary Reference 2499, the 3970 marked the beginning of a new chapter in the lineage of Patek Philippe's perpetual calendar chronographs, preserving the classical proportions and balanced calendar display of its predecessors while incorporating a more modern case construction and refined mechanical architecture.
The present watch is a Reference 3970EJ-053 manufactured and sold in 1994 and cased in 18k yellow gold. The "E" designation denotes the improved étanche screw-down case construction introduced for the reference, while the suffix "J" identifies the case metal as yellow gold. The final configuration code "053" corresponds to the specific dial and configuration variant recorded in Patek Philippe's archives for this model. The watch measures approximately 36.3 millimeters in diameter and retains the restrained proportions that collectors increasingly associate with the most elegant era of Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronographs.
According to the accompanying Extract from the Archives, the watch is fitted with a silvery opaline-white dial with applied yellow gold sword-shaped indexes. The dial displays the full perpetual calendar indications of day, date, month, leap year, and a.m./p.m., together with moon phases and a 30-minute chronograph register arranged in the classical tri-register layout that has defined Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronographs since the mid-twentieth century.
Examples of the Reference 3970 encountered today have frequently been fitted with later factory service dials during routine maintenance over the decades. For this reason, well-preserved examples retaining dial configurations consistent with their period of production have become increasingly appreciated by collectors seeking historically coherent examples of the reference.
The movement is the manually wound caliber CH 27-70 Q, one of the most respected perpetual calendar chronograph calibers of the late twentieth century. Based upon the Lemania 2310 architecture and extensively modified, finished, and regulated by Patek Philippe, the movement combines traditional column-wheel chronograph construction with the manufacture's perpetual calendar module and represents one of the final generations of classically constructed perpetual calendar chronographs produced before the gradual transition toward larger case formats in the early twenty-first century.
The present watch is accompanied by its Extract from the Archives dated February 13, 2020 confirming production in 1994 and sale on May 18 of that same year. Additional accompanying materials include the Patek Philippe presentation box, service documentation, and setting instructions.
Service records from the Henri Stern Watch Agency confirm that the watch underwent a complete Patek Philippe service in August 2022. The work included full disassembly and examination of all components, cleaning and replacement of basic movement parts and crown, regulation and timing of the movement, replacement of the front and back crystals, replacement of the chronograph pushers, replacement deployant buckle screws, and installation of a new black alligator strap.
The case remains well preserved overall and retains strong hallmarks to the exterior of the lugs at approximately the 10:30 and 4:30 positions, supporting the impression of careful ownership and sympathetic preservation.
Condition: The watch presents in very well preserved condition overall. The case retains strong definition with visible hallmarks to the lugs, and the dial appears clean and well preserved. The watch is fitted with a Patek Philippe black alligator strap and 18k yellow gold deployant clasp. Observed running and setting normally at the time of cataloguing.
