Catalogue Notes

Introduced in 1938, the Patek Philippe Reference 570 represents one of the most celebrated oversized Calatrava models produced during the mid-twentieth century. Conceived as a larger counterpart to the legendary Reference 96, the model quickly established itself as the manufacture's definitive large-format dress watch and remained in production for more than three decades.

Characterized by its balanced 35 mm case, flat bezel, and elongated tapered lugs, the reference embodies the restrained elegance that defines the Calatrava aesthetic while offering proportions that were considered notably large for the period. These disciplined yet modern dimensions contribute to the reference's enduring appeal among collectors, earning it the affectionate nickname "Calatravone."

Later examples of the reference, including the present watch, were fitted with the manually wound Caliber 27SC, a refined movement incorporating sweep center seconds. The adoption of a center-seconds display reflects the broader evolution of mid-century wristwatch design as manufacturers increasingly favored the practicality and visual clarity of central seconds indications.

Dials of the reference are typically encountered in silvered or lightly toned configurations with applied gold hour markers and finely executed minute tracks. The present example features a particularly attractive warm cream dial signed Patek Philippe Genève in raised enamel, executed with applied gold lapped hour markers and an outer minute track composed of applied pearl markers, details that contribute both depth and refinement to the overall dial architecture.

The case retains the elegant geometry for which the reference is known, displaying the long flowing lugs and flat bezel that define the model's visual identity. Multiple hallmarks remain visible, including a crisp Swiss gold hallmark beneath the lugs and a faint external hallmark along the case flank, elements that further attest to the integrity of the case.

Condition: Preserved in notably attractive condition, the watch retains strong case proportions with clearly defined lugs and visible hallmarks. The dial displays a warm, even cream tone with crisp raised enamel signature and well-preserved applied markers and pearl minute track, contributing to the overall coherence and visual balance of the watch.

WRISTORIAN Perspective
The Reference 570 occupies a foundational position within the history of Patek Philippe’s wristwatches. Introduced in the late 1930s as the larger companion to the celebrated Reference 96, it represented the manufacture’s first sustained exploration of a more expansive Calatrava format. In an era when most wristwatches measured closer to 30 millimeters, the 570’s broader proportions gave it a distinctly modern presence—one that continues to resonate strongly with contemporary collectors.

Part of the enduring appeal of the reference lies in its remarkable balance. The flat bezel, elongated lugs, and restrained dial architecture create a watch that feels both disciplined and expressive, a design that manages to be unmistakably Patek Philippe while still possessing a quiet sense of confidence. It is a watch that wears larger than many of its contemporaries yet never feels oversized, maintaining the elegance expected of the Calatrava lineage.

This particular example presents especially well. The dial carries a warm cream tone that gives the watch a softness rarely encountered on brighter silvered examples, while the raised enamel Patek Philippe Genève signature remains notably crisp. Applied gold lapped markers and the outer pearl minute track add depth and subtle texture to the dial surface, and the blued central seconds hand introduces a delicate point of contrast that enlivens the otherwise restrained palette. Together these details create a dial that rewards close study while maintaining the calm composure that defines the reference.

For collectors drawn to the defining references of Patek Philippe’s mid-century production, the Reference 570 remains one of the most satisfying watches to encounter and to wear. Its proportions feel effortlessly modern even decades after its introduction, and examples preserved with attractive dial character and strong case geometry tend to hold enduring appeal. Watches of this kind offer the rare combination of historical significance, everyday wearability, and quiet visual harmony—qualities that explain why the 570 has remained a cornerstone of serious Patek Philippe collecting for generations.
